The Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians held a lecture-forum on the theme “LIBRARY SERVICES & TEACHING PORTFOLIOS: COLLECTING AND CREATING, A PROFESSIONAL’S BEST” last July 13, 2011 at the Seminar Room of Megatrade Hall 3, 5th Level Mega B, SM Megamall, EDSA, Mandaluyong City. The event was participated by Dr. Augusta Rosario Villamater and Ms. Geraldine G. Mallo.
The event started with the registration of the participants at 10:00 in the morning. A welcome remark was given by the president of the association, Mr. Roderick B. Ramos. The lecture forum proper was held at around 10:30 in the morning. It was profoundly delivered by Professor Rhea Rowena Apolinario of the University of the Philippines Diliman, School of Library and Information Studies.
The following was discussed in the lecture forum:
- Meaning of portfolio- A case for carrying loose paper, from the Greek word “portare” – to carry, “folium” – a sheet for writing upon, refers to a person’s work and a way of promoting/branding yourself.
- Projects and Services Portfolio – collection of offered projects and services currently offered and the future offerings.
- The library services and projects which should have a portfolio – bibliography and Indexing, Ask-a-Librarian, Database Searching, Current Awareness Services, Document Delivery, Interlibrary Loan Referrals, Interactive Virtual Tour Emulation (INVITE), Library Orientation and Tours, Online Library Instruction, Extended Reading, Learning Commons, Dubbing Services, Reader’s Advisory, Internet Access, Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) network, exhibits and displays, patronage rewards, contests, games, tournaments, books sales, book fairs, library jingle and library brand.
- How to organize portfolio – By kind of service, project, theme or year.
- Teaching Portfolio – includes teaching strengths and accomplishments, knowing your audience, scope and quality of teaching performance, recent and new accomplishments.
- Process of making portfolio – Starts with defining your purpose, selecting your portfolio medium, selecting your standard, elements of your portfolio and keeping track/updating.
- Tips in making portfolio – Know your purpose, tailor your portfolio to your needs, include projects you have worked on in your current job, show your individuality
At 2:00 in the afternoon the lecture ended with the mind of the participants to start making their own professional portfolio. The program was closed with the remarks from the VP/Chair of the association Ms. Sonia M. Gementiza.
