The Society of Filipino Archivists, Inc. (SFA) with the cooperation of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts holds a Seminar-Workshop on Emergency and Recovery Team for Records and Heritage Collections last August 10-12, 2011 at Bethel Guest House, Rizal Boulevard, Dumaguete City.
The seminar-workshop aims to establish teams in communities and regions that are equipped with knowledge and expertise in emergency recovery and response; develop a Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the emergency Respone and Recovery Team; and develop Disaster Recovery Plan for arts and cultural institutions.
The first day (August 10, 2011) started with the registration of participants. In the program proper it started with an invocation followed by the national anthem. Welcome remarks was delivered by Prof Yolanda Granda, the president of SFA followed by a keynote speech/address by Hon. William E. Ablong, City Administrator and former Vice Mayor of Dumaguete City.
The first session started at 1:00 in the afternoon. The first topic was about “Principle Disaster Preparedness (Preparation, Response and Recovery) which was discussed by Prof. Yolanda Granda and Mrs. Raidis Bassig. It was followed immediately with a workshop on Evaluating Disaster Preparedness of Participants wherein all participants must evaluate the preparedness of their respective institution when a disaster occurred. Another topic discussed on day 1 was “Understanding and Assessing Priorities in the Collection” discussed by Dir. Emma Rey.
The 2nd day (August 11, 2011) started with a Management of Learning (MOL) wherein there will be a drill of what had been discussed the previous day. The first activity on day 2 was a workshop on “Assessing Priorities in the Collection” which was based on the discussion of Dir. Emma Rey on day 1. In the workshop, we have to assess priorities of all our collection (institutional collection). The third topic was “Business Continuity: Reinstating Core Business Activities” discussed by Dir. Emma Rey and Denise Marie Cruz. It was followed by another topic on “Risk Assessment” discussed by Dir. Emma Rey. A workshop on the said topic (Risk Assessment) followed. Day 2 ended with the discussion on the fifth topic on “Putting Together a Disaster Preparedness Plan” by Mrs. Ma. Teresa S. Bondoc.
On the last day (August 12, 2011), there was discussion on “Salvage Procedures” by Prof. Yolanda Granda assisted by Emma Rey. A workshop on salvaging on wet documents followed.
The last part of the program was the distribution of certificates. The program ended at 12:00 noon. It was a productive 3-day seminar-workshop on disaster preparedness plan for an archivists, librarians, and other employee of an institution.
