Collection Assessment: Tools and Methodologies

Philippine Normal University Library and Information Science Alumni Association (PNULISAA)sponsored a three – day seminar workshop on “Collection Assessment: Tools and Methodologies” held at East Point Hotel by the Sea, Balaring, Boac, Marinduque on August 10-12, 2011. 

The conference started with opening ceremonies where Mrs. Ana Maria Fresnido delivered her opening remarks as Vice President of PNULISAA and chair person for the event.  The Mayor of Boac Marinduque also graced the occasion with his welcome remarks. The PNULISAA president Art Morales gave the training overview and leveling of expectations to the participants.

The first day was really full of meaty information with Ms. Cielito D.R. Santos, Librarian from Bulacan State University, to impart the basics and foundations of collection assessment as her introduction.  Participants were given preparatory planning stage.  Collection-centered assessment was discussed by Ms. Janice Penaflor with emphasis to citation analysis and expert appraisal.  The third session was given by Ms. Willian Frias regarding the client-centered assessment.  The emphasis was on the resource usage statistics, resource sharing statistics, citation studies , user’s survey assessments and shelf availability studies.  The first day was closed with the sharing of Ms. Hongbin Pu, a Chinese national under the mentorship of Ms. Fresnido.  She shared on the collection development practices of China.

The second day compressed the topics on Assessing the Electronic Databases which was discussed by Ms. Ana Fresnido of Dela Salle University-Manila.    Preparation of the Collection Assessment Report was done by Dr. Teresita Hernandez-Calma.  She suggested report guidelines and format for report writing.  Workshop on Determining the Age of the Library collection was given by Ms. Vivian Del Castillo-Sy in detail using the Microsoft excel.

The participants of the seminar-workshop was warmly welcomed by the Personnel from the Provincial Capitol by expressing/sharing their cultural festive of welcoming guest in the province through “Tubungan, Kainan, Kantahan at Sayawan”.

The last day was devoted to cultural and historical learnings for the participants.  A walking tour was organized to visit the local old houses, Casa real, museum and the Boac church.
